Veronica elected to find her own way home, and Felicity could hardly blame her. She and Jack were about to go at it, and no one would have wanted to be the third wheel in that car. It was a long drive back to the shop in Senoia, and Felicity had plenty to say about Jack’s behavior at the party. They were supposed to be professionals, and Jack had punched a college kid in the face. Sure, they hadn’t been hired to work this case, but that didn’t mean their reputations couldn’t be tainted before they even got started.

By the time they arrived outside of the Overton building, Jack had finally started firing back after willingly accepting her tirade for most of the ride back. “You know what, Felicity, drop it!” Jack shouted, slamming the car door and marching up to the building.

“No, I’m not going to drop it!” she called after him, practically chasing him into the shop.

They entered the building, and they saw Jefferson standing behind the counter while Trixie was dusting some shelves and Fix was standing by her talking. Jack, upon seeing Fix, snarled, “You’re supposed to be manning the phones upstairs!”

Fix nearly toppled over himself, like he thought Jack was going to swing at him—not that that was a completely crazy guess after what Jack had done at the fraternity house. “Jack, you know the phones ring down here too, right?” Jefferson said, smirking and not quite picking up on Jack’s temper just yet. “Let the kid…” Jefferson stopped talking as Felicity shook her head at him, warning him that tensions were high.

“Don’t take this out on Fix, Jack,” Felicity warned, and Jack spun around.

“You’ve been screaming at me for twenty minutes! Pardon me if my nerves are a little shot!” Jack roared.

“Yeah, well, you were the one acting like an unprofessional rookie cop,” Felicity said.

“I’m no rookie!”

“Well, quit acting like one!” Felicity shouted.

“What happened at the party?” Jefferson asked.

“Jack punched someone in the face!” Felicity announced.

Jack stiffened. He pointed at her. “Oh, yeah, just sum it up like that—make me sound like I’m so awful! You know there was more to it than me just slugging some guy in the face.”

“Your temper is out of line,” Felicity said. “In case you forgot, my name is on the building, Jack. You are representing me!”

Jack’s face turned an angry, dark red. “Your name is on the building? That’s strictly marketing, and you know it! I own half that detective agency. Jefferson owns half the party shop. Putting your name on the building does not make you my boss! We’re business partners, or have you forgotten?”

“I haven’t forgotten,” Felicity said. “But that doesn’t change anything I said.”

“So, you think I’ve crossed a line, huh?”

“That’s exactly what I think,” she said. “Your behavior is inexcusable.”

“You know what? So have you, Felicity! You keep letting your boyfriend step in on our business. Can you even handle this? You’re running two separate businesses, you know!”

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Jefferson said, laughing.
